MOUNTAINEERING
Mountaineering is the sport of attaining great heights in mountainous regions just for the pleasure of the climb. It is different from other sports because the success of the participants rests almost entirely on their own powers of physical endurance and judgment to reach their goal. The mountain provides the field of action. Why are people interested in mountaineering? First, they have a desire to conquer nature--to achieve the most difficult and the most impossible task. Also their spirit of adventure and interest in exploring unknown places provide the impetus to do mountaineering. A climber must be skilled in both rock climbing and snow and ice climbing. Rock climbing is done on the uppermost slopes of a high peak after getting through the lower reaches of snow and ice. Snow and ice climbing involve greater skill and endurance. Ice axes are used to cut steps on the slopes. Cutting a step down the slope is more difficult than cutting one up.
