ALGAE AND BRYOPHYTES SYLLABUS


UNIT – I
Classification (Bold and Wyne, 1978) of algae. Range of vegetative structure, cellular organization, thallus organization, plastid  and pigments, life cycle patterns.
UNIT - II
Structure and reproduction of following types: Nostoc, Volvox, Caulerpa, Chora, Cyclotella, Sargassum, Grocillaria.
UNIT - III
Economic importance of algae, SCP, LSF (Liquid seaweed fertilizer), Mass cultivation of algae, BGA, Algal hydrocarbon, Hydrogen production, oxidation ponds.
UNIT - IV
General characteristics, classification of Bryophytes by Proskaeur (1957 - upto order level). Salient features of Hepaticopsida, Anthocerotopsida and Bryopsida. Occurrence and distribution. Bryophytes as indicators of pollution.
UNIT - V
  Detailed study of the morphology, anatomy, reproduction and life cycle of the genera (excluding the development) 1. Marchantia  2. Anthoceros  3. Polytrichum.
