AMS

AMR (Audio Modem Riser), introduced in the late 1990s, allows for the creation of lower-cost sound and modem solutions. The AMR card plugs directly into a special slot on the motherboard and utilizes the CPU to perform modem functions, using up to 20 percent of the available processor power for this purpose. The advantage of this is the elimination of separate modem and sound cards without typing up a PCI slot in newer computers. The AMR card connects directly to a telephone line and audio output devices. One of the shortcomings of AMR was that it was not plug and play.
