UNIT - I
Classification (Alexopolous, 1962) of fungi. General characters of classes: Myxomycetes, Piasmodiophoromycetes, Oomycetes, Ascomycetes, Basidiomycetes, Deuteromycetes.
UNIT - II
Detailed study of the structure and reproduction of the types: Albugo, Peziza, Aspergillus, Puccinia, Polyporus. Lichens and their importance.
UNIT – III
Economic importance of fungi, Mycotoxins, Biocontrol agent (Trichoderma). Mycorrhiza types and the importance. Penicillin, citric acid production and the uses. Mycoprotein, production of yeast biomass.
UNIT – IV
A general account of disease control - cultural practices, quarantine, chemical control (Bordeaux mixture, organophosphates) Taxins in plant diseases-fusaric acid, victorin, pyricularin.
UNIT – V
Study of the causal organism, symptoms and control of the following diseases: Rice blast, Citrus canker, Tikka disease.
